I've mostly run photoperiods in recirculating systems, but I did test a couple autos in DWC a while back and had the same experience you did... soil plants stayed pretty compact while the DWC one went beast mode. That's why your question about stuffing 20 autos into a Growstream 20 is interesting.
From what I've seen, autos can swing wildly in size depending on strain and how stable the genetics are. Some stay squat and manageable, others stretch like they're trying to be photos. The Growstream pots aren't tiny, but if every auto you run decides to bulk up, you're going to run out of elbow room fast. If it were me, I'd test with half the system first. Run 10 pots, see how the root zones and canopy space fill out, then scale. Otherwise you risk overcrowding and a jungle that's hard to manage. Anyone here actually gone full 20-auto run in one of these systems?
