Getting started with hydroponics

I'm a bit lost on where to start, and actually this has been the only reason holding me back for a while now but now I'm here I guess its a big step already. Anyway, the biggest question in my head right now is water!, what's the best way to filter it before running it through a system? I've seen and heard everything from small reverse osmosis kits to just using treated tap water but still not sure
Then there's the nutrient side, premade mixes or go the DIY route?, but I'd rather not burn a hole in my wallet testing ten brands before I find something that works lol
Last thing though, I can't decide whether it makes more sense to build a system from scratch or just buy a beginner friendly setup online and work on it later

It's awesome you're diving into this and the overwhelm is normal!!
For water, don't overthink it! You can get a cheap TDS meter and that will tell you what you need.
So it's fine to start with treated tap water. Then if it's really high in PPM, you can always look into an RO filter later.
Then go with a a premade kit for nutrients.
General Hydroponics or FoxFarm have great starter packs that are simple and save you from the headache of DIY mixing.
Then for the system, buying a beginner-friendly kit is the way to go.
You'll get everything you need and can see how a system works before you try building one from scratch.
The best move for you right now is to just get started!

Totally agree! I built my first hydro setup in my garage using a basic kit and tap water with a TDS meter. It worked great for leafy greens.

What kind of plants are you planning to grow? And are you working indoors or outdoors? That can help decide if you'll need extra lighting or temp control down the line.
