Annoying root sludge keeps popping up

I'm dealing with this brownish root sludge that keeps showing up, no matter what I do. It's driving me crazy! One week the roots look great, then suddenly, a sludgy mess. I change the water weekly, but this sludge popped up just a day after my last change. Some buckets are fine, but others randomly get it..the roots are growing and healthy otherwise. I use tap water, temps are steady, and pH is on point, help me please!

Seem like you're dealing with biofilm or anaerobic bacteria both of which can cause that kind of brown film. In most cases this happens because you either have poor oxygenation, unfiltered organics or contaminants from tap water. Clean the buckets, system and everything else that you use and make sure you use hydrogen peroxide or a bleach solution. Check if the pump and stones provide the necessary oxygen and use synthetic nutrients for now, until you sort things out.

You're probably dealing with some kind of bacterial bloom especially if it pops up fast after a water change and tap water might be part of it, even if pH is taken care of, the chlorine or chloramine can still mess with your microbe balance, run RO water or at least let your tap sit out for 24 to 48 hrs before using.

Totally get that! Those tap additives can really mess things up, can't they? Do you normaly dechlorinate your water, or do you just let it sit for a bit?

Have you checked if light might be hitting your reservoir?
It sounds like you got an algae or bacterial problem, and light can encourage quick growth!!
I suggest you paint or wrap your reservoir and also let your tap water sit out for 24 hours to dissipate chlorine before mixing nutrients.
You might also need to physically scrub those affected buckets more thoroughly between cycles to eliminate any lingering issues!

I've experienced that frustration as well. I once had a small hydro setup, and no matter how carefully I sealed the lids, a tiny light leak at one corner caused algae to grow like crazy. One bucket would be pristine, while the one next to it looked like a swamp. I finally decided to wrap my buckets in reflective tape and switched to using filtered water. That did the trick, and everything cleared up within a week.

It might be a good idea to check for any hidden light leaks or leftover residue you might have missed while cleaning. By the way, what kind of nutrients are you using? Some of them can promote bio-slime growth more quickly than others.

Are your buckets completely light proof? Any light hitting the nutrient solution will cause algae and then bacterial sludge. Even tiny pinholes can be enough. Cover them completely

Very annoying thing, even with good water and stable pH, tap water can sometimes carry minerals or microbes that encourage that slimy buildup and make sure to clean your buckets thoroughly between changes, any leftover biofilm can quickly grow back

How often should I clean the system with hydrogen peroxide? And when you say synthetic nutrients, do you mean something like General Hydroponics? Just trying to get things back on track before my lettuce gives up on me!

You put 300ml to 500ml 3% H2O2 in a 100 litre tank.
You can do it always.
